Journey Steel Inc. partners Barb Smith and Tom Garten founded Journeys Soaring Impact, an Ironworking Pre-Apprenticeship Program, in 2016 to introduce youth to life-changing careers in ironworking.
The program gives back to the community by providing career pathways for underserved and disadvantaged inner-city high school seniors, while also addressing the industry’s need for diversity and preparing youth to enter the aging, non-diverse workforce of construction.

High school students who have completed their junior year are eligible to join our Ironworking Pre-Apprenticeship Program, certified by the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council (OSAC).

Youth receive paid, hands-on training in the steel industry while completing their senior year of high school.
Upon successfully completing the ironworking program, participants gain direct entry into the Ironworkers Local 44 as first-year apprentices, setting them on a path to a lifelong, sustainable career.
