Journey Steel Inc. partners Barb Smith and Tom Garten, founded the non-profit arm "Journeys Soaring Impact" an Ironworking Pre-Apprenticeship Program in 2016, as a means to introduce youth to life changing careers in the field of ironworking.
The program gives back to the community by providing career opportunities for underserved and disadvantaged inner-city high school 12th graders, while also addressing the growing concern of diversity and youth in the aging and non-diverse world of construction.
High School students completing their junior year are eligible to participate in the ironworking pre-apprenticeship program, certified by the Ohio State Apprenticeship Council (OSAC).
Youth get paid hands-on training in the steel industry while completing their senior year of high school. Once the participants complete the one-year program, they are given direct entry into the Ironworkers Local 44 as a
1st-year apprentice.
